In 1994, after languishing in the minority for 40 years, the Republicans decided to stop being the me-too party. They took a principled conservative stand against the reigning liberal dogmas – and won big, taking control of Congress. Key to this victory was Newt Gingrich’s Contract with America, a conservative agenda that rallied Americans in favor of limited government and promised to reform the way Congress worked.

Since then, politicians across the political spectrum have tried – and failed – to repeat the Contract’s success in galvanizing the electorate. Join former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich on the 20th anniversary of the Contract with America, as he reflects on the lessons it holds for the political landscape today.

This lecture is the third of four events in the “Lessons for Conservatives from Goldwater to the Tea Party” series hosted by the B. Kenneth Simon Center for Principles and Politics. The Simon Center previously featured George Will who reflected on Barry Goldwater’s presidential run and a panel discussion on “Do We Need Another Reagan?”
