Flex Your Rights

Spotlight on Liberty Feature

Flex Your Rights helps people understand and protect the Constitution. Their video, BUSTED: The Citizen's Guide to Surviving Police Encounters, walks viewers through three different scenarios where individuals' Fourth Amendment Rights are routinely challenged.

The Fourth Amendment protects people against "unreasonable search and seizure," but the definition of "unreasonable," determined by the courts, is constantly evolving.

A majority of avoidable police searches occur because citizens naively waive their Fourth Amendment rights by consenting to warrantless searches. As a general rule, if a person consents to a warrantless search, the search automatically becomes reasonable and therefore legal. While nine times out of ten, these searches yield no evidence of criminal wrongdoing, they do help define our Fourth Amendment rights.

In order to preserve the protections guaranteed by the Constitution, citizens must exercise their rights. IHS alum and Flex Your Rights founder Steven Silverman is helping thousands of young people learn how to do just that.
