Associate Director, Major Gifts 

Reporting directly to the Associate Dean, the Associate Director plans and implements fundraising activities for the Searle Center. Bears significant responsibility for the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major gift prospects at the $50,000+ level. Develops and executes strategies of an aggressive solicitation plan of corporations, foundations, and government support for the Searle Center at Northwestern University School of Law. 

JOB DESCRIPTION

  1. Work in partnership with the Associate Dean for Development, Executive Director of the Searle Center on Law, and the Central Alumni Relations & Development Office in the development and execution of an aggressive solicitation plan of corporations, foundations, and government support. Direct fundraising activities for potential donors capable of making major contributions (i.e., $50,000 - $5.0 million) for the benefit of the School of Law and the Center. Travel to areas outside the Chicago area is required.
  2. Write proposals, and track and report results in support of the mission of the Center and Northwestern Law School. Write correspondence and proposals to prospective donors, preparing reports on meetings and interactions. Maintain effective working relationships with the Center’s funding partners, including research and follow up communication.
  3. Coordinate appointments and prepare materials used by the Executive Director, Dean, Associate Dean and other senior Law School administrators for any meetings, visits, events or phone calls made to corporations, foundations, and government support organizations. Work closely with the Executive Director on all aspects of donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  4. Update and maintain prospect management information in the donor database.
  5. Assist with Center events and accept other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean for Development and the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Baccalaureate degree or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
  2. Minimum of 5 years of successful experience in fundraising, marketing and sales, or a related field supplemented by experience as an employee of or volunteer for a not-for-profit institution. Corporate and foundation giving experience preferred.
  3. Excellent communications skills, coupled with strong writing and presentation skills, as well as the ability to present before a group.
  4. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a team environment.
  5. Discretion and an ability to interact with high-level donors.
  6. Comfort with personal computers and MS Office software programs.
