The Mercatus Center at George Mason University seeks to hire a Program Associate for the Global Prosperity Initiative to work on Mercatus' research program in the Gulf Coast. This position is ideal for a recent college or masters’ graduate with both academic and work experience in economic policy research and program implementation. The position will consist of both research and program implementation. The ideal candidate will be able to conduct economic policy research assistance in conjunction with one or more senior scholars, implement programs with minimal supervision, assist in strategic project planning, assist in maintenance of web pages, and work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds in both the academic and policy communities. The ability to work under uncertainty and adapt to situations as they unfold is critical.
This position will include (but not be limited to) the following specific responsibilities:
- Providing research assistance to senior scholars and fellows as part of the Mercatus Center’s project studying the rebuilding of the Gulf Coast;
- Organizing and administering field studies;
- Assisting senior scholars and fellows with one or more new projects through both research and management assistance;
- Assisting the Associate Director of the Global Prosperity Initiative with planning and executing field research and policy outreach programs in Louisiana and Mississippi;
- Maintaining excellent records for GPI programs, including financial records and mailing and contact lists;
- Editing a variety of academic, policy, and popular media pieces;
- Identifying outreach opportunities within academia and the policy community;
- Keeping abreast of news regarding the many issues in the Mercatus portfolio.
The successful candidate will be interested in working on a fast-paced, growing project. Knowledge of economics, political science, and/or ethnography is desirable and a minimum of a bachelor's degree is required. Attention to detail and excellent judgment are essential. This position will require the candidate to quickly establish and effectively maintain relationships with a wide variety of people during the course of field research. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in applying complex ideas to solve policy problems and advancing the state of knowledge in the area of social change and international development. Strong interpersonal, writing, editing, research, and organization skills are critical. This position may involve significant travel opportunities.
Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with experience.
