SUMMARY:Heritage: Michigan Workers Rights
DESCRIPTION:The Heritage Foundation. Over the past two years\, several Midwest governors have turned their states’ status quo; government and economies around by tackling the special privileges afforded to unions. These efforts were met with particular resistance in Michigan\, where unions funded a ballot proposal to preemptively ban right-to-work and make collective bargaining a state constitutional right. Proposal 2 would also have allowed union contracts to invalidate and override state law where it was in conflict with such collective bargaining agreements. Michigan voters rejected the proposal by a 58-42 percent margin. In the wake of the vote\, right-to-work bills were subsequently passed by the Michigan legislature and signed into law by the Governor\, making Michigan the nation’s 24th right-to-work state. Join us as Dick DeVos -- entrepreneur\, businessman and civic leader -- examines recent events in his home state and reflects on labor issues and labor policy nationwide.
