SUMMARY:Constitution Project: Webinar: Federal Advocacy After the Obamacare Decision
DESCRIPTION:Please join The Constitution Project and Arnold & Porter for a webinar on Thursday\, January 31\, 2013\, at 12:30 p.m. ET to discuss how the Court's decision in the Affordable Care Act case affects Congress' ability to act through its commerce clause\, taxing and spending powers. The webinar will feature Robert Weiner\, a senior partner at the law firm of Arnold & Porter\, who served as Associate Deputy Attorney General at the Department of Justice\, overseeing the defense of Obamacare from the outset of litigation through the arguments at the Supreme Court. The webinar is complimentary\, but registration is required. To register\, click here. The U.S. Supreme Court's decision raised questions about the constitutionality of existing and proposed federal programs that seek to promote federal policies by threatening to withhold funds unless the states meet certain requirements. For example\, to what extent can the federal government tie federal educational funds to state accommodation of children with disabilities\, tie law enforcement grants to state provision for indigent defense\, or tie highway funding to license eligibility criteria? In answering these questions\, this webinar will help to clarify the extent to which the Court's decision may affect the ability of advocacy organizations to promote congressional action to address issues in a variety of areas\, from healthcare\, to education\, to criminal justice. It will also serve as a helpful guide to Congress and congressional staff as they consider new proposals. Please feel free to pass this information along to your listservs and networks as well as additional partners and colleagues that would benefit from this discussion. The discussion will be based on the recent memorandum Mr. Weiner co-authored for The Constitution Project along with Arnold & Porter attorneys Alan Veronick and Julian Waldo To register\, click here. Login information will be provided closer to the event. For more information\, please contact Christopher Durocher at cdurocher@constitutionproject.org.
