"The mission of The Independent Institute is to transcend the all-too-common politicization and superficiality of public policy research and debate, redefine the debate over public issues, and foster new and effective directions for government reform." - The Independent Institute offers eight-week paid internships throughout the year. Students work with fellows and staff in public policy research on a variety of topics. Undergraduate and graduate college students—preferabably those studying economics, law, public policy, political science or related social sciences—are eligible for the internship program.
- The Garvey Fellowship is an essay competition, held every other year, that requires contestants to write about the meaning and significance of economic and personal liberty.
- Publications include books, The Independent Review (a quarterly journal), policy reports, working papers and audio/visual programs.
- The Institute hosts summer seminars on liberty, economy, and society for students annually.
- The Independent Scholarship Fund offers children a competitive education alternative in the San Francisco East Bay.
