Bernard Bailyn received his PhD from Harvard University and began teaching there in 1953. His Ideological Origins of the American Revolution received Pulitzer and Bancroft Prizes (1968); Voyagers to the West received the Pulitzer Prize in 1986. An authority on the American Revolutionary period, he was president of the American Historical Association in 1981 and became director of the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History in 1983.
